PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 1 Portland Pilots finished off nonconference play with a 2-1 win over the FIU Panthers. The Pilots remain unbeaten with an 8-0-1 record overall.
Anton Hjalmarsson and David Ajagbe were the goalscorers for the Pilots. It was the second goal of the year for Hjalmarsson and sixth for Ajagbe. The win extends Portland's unbeaten streak to 19, the second longest in the nation and the best since 1988.
How it Happened
Anton Hjalmarsson scored the first goal for the Pilots almost in the first minute. Hjalmarsson bolted down the field after receiving a high-arching ball from David Ajagbe, sending it home to give Portland an early 1-0 lead 62 seconds in.
FIU took a red card in the 34
th minute that put the Panthers a man down the rest of the way. The Panthers, however, managed to score in the 71
st minute in the box to even things at 1-1.
Portland didn't wait long to respond, scoring in the 75
th minute. It was Ajagbe getting on the board, taking a pass from Hjalmarsson down the right side. Ajagbe finished it off to give Portland a lead that would hold.
