PORTLAND, Ore. – Trailing by double digits in the second half, the Portland Pilots pulled off the comeback to beat the San Diego Toreros 64-59 at the Chiles Center. The win completes an undefeated week for Portland, who improves to 13-10 overall and 7-4 in WCC play.
Florence Dallow was stellar from the field, scoring 18 points and adding eight rebounds and three assists. Her eight rebounds match a career high and her 18 points set a career high. Jada Kennedy was stellar in the post, scoring 12 points with six rebounds and four blocks, and Dyani Ananiev rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points herself and three blocks.
The Pilots were stout defensively, putting together nine blocks and 12 steals. Kennedy's four blocks led the way for Portland, while Ananiev added another three blocks, a career high. Nicole Anderson matched her career high for steals with four takeaways on the day. The Pilots held the Toreros under 40% shooting at a 37.3% clip.
How it Happened
Both teams forced plenty of turnovers in the first quarter, with a combined 12 turnovers and six steals. Neither team gained a clear advantage on the scoreboard either, with the lead changing hands six times. The Toreros grabbed an and-one bucket at the end of the first to take a 15-14 lead through the first 10 minutes.
Portland came out on fire in the second quarter, putting together a 9-0 run to retake the lead and push the advantage to seven points. San Diego cut into that lead slightly before the Pilots scored another five straight points to get their advantage to eight points. The Pilots allowed just seven points in the quarter to hold a 27-22 lead.
The Pilots and Toreros traded buckets early in the third quarter until Olivia Owens took over for San Diego, scoring 13 points in the period by herself. Momentum swung in favor of the Toreros. San Diego conjured up a 15-0 run to push their lead to double digits. Portland had ceded the lead, but they managed to put together a 7-0 run to end the quarter and put themselves back within three points at 47-44.
The final quarter started and the two teams continued to exchange buckets. But the Pilots finally regained the momentum with an 8-0 to give themselves a 3-point lead with just over four minutes to play. The Pilots and Toreros were neck and neck the rest of the way, with Anderson and Dallow hitting three combined free throws in the final 10 seconds to secure the 64-59 win for the Pilots.
