PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots two-way player Trey Swygart was electric for Portland today, earning the win on the mound while mashing two home runs in a 5-3 win to open conference play against the LMU Lions. The Pilots improve to 12-7 on the year with wins in 10 of their last 12 games, including four in a row. Portland also starts 1-0 against WCC opponents.
Swygart was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and three RBIs, leading Portland. Swygart also went 3.2 innings on the mound, allowing just three hits with no runs and seven strikeouts. With two homers today, Swygart now has three on the year – tied for the team lead – and the win is his third of the season. Only him and Carter Gaston have three wins on the year for Portland.
Jonas Salk was one of three Pilots to record multiple hits, batting 2-for-4 with a hit by pitch. Dakota Chun was the other, hitting 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI's. The double is his eighth of the year, twice as much as the next Pilot batter. Trey Newmann was the starter for Portland on the mound, going four innings with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed, with his seven strikeouts tied for the most by a Pilot pitcher this year with Swygart. Alex Via earned his third save, pitching 1.1 innings with no runs allowed. Portland's 15 strikeouts are the most by the Pilots this season.
How it Happened
LMU led early on, scoring on an RBI single in the first inning and hitting a two-run homer in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead on the Pilots. That lead was erased in the fifth inning, with Swygart's first home run – a solo shot to right field – and Chun's two-run double tying things up at 3-3.
Portland took the lead in the eighth. Swygart once again stepped up to the plate and mashed it over the right-field wall once again, bringing home himself and Salk to make it 5-3 Pilots. The score would hold the rest of the way for the Pilot win.
