PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland women's tennis saw their five-match win streak come to an end with a 5-2 loss to No. 45 San Diego Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 6-6 overall, while the Toreros improve 7-7 on the season.
San Diego secured the doubles point to grab the early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Portland's No. 2 tandem of Dariya Radulova and Lexie Flores were a point away from winning when the match was abandoned at 5-3.
The first wave of singles was a battle, but the Toreros came out on top of all three matches. Charlotte Keitel held off Alaia Rubio Perez in straight sets at the top of the order. Nadine Arbaizar Martinez pushed No. 109 Hannah Read to the brink, but came up short 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Radulova then dropped a 6-4, 7-6 decision to Vilma Krebs Hyllested at No. 2 that clinched for San Diego.
Pilot senior Meagan Pearson picked up a straight set win over Kristina Nordikyan 7-5, 7-6 at No. 6 singles and Maria Galatescu picked up Portland's other point when her opponent retired midway through the second set at No. 4.
The Pilots continue WCC play on the road next weekend with matches at LMU on Saturday and Pepperdine on Sunday.
