OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – For the second season in a row, Portland Pilots two-way sophomore Trey Swygart was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List.
Swygart was one of 49 players named to the watch list. The award recognizes the best dual-role players in the nation, highlighting those who excel both on the mound and at the plate. Named after former Washington State pitcher and first baseman John Olerud, the award is one of four presented by the College Baseball Foundation and the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Swygart became the first player to be named to the list in program history last year and repeats as a selection this season. Last season, Swygart appeared in 32 games at the plate with 25 starts, batting .342 with a 1.144 OPS. Swygart had six home runs and 14 RBI's as well. He pitched 31 innings last year for Portland, striking out 25 batters with a 6.97 ERA. He was named a Freshman All-American by Perfect Game.
This year, Swygart has appeared in three games with one start, throwing 8.2 innings and posting a 3.12 ERA. His appearance against Niagara helped the Pilots earn the win last weekend on Saturday, with the game officially going down as Swygart's first recorded win. He's played in 10 games in the field, recording four hits with a double and an RBI.
The Pilots continue their homestand with a four-game series against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The series begins on Thursday, March 5 and runs through Sunday, March 8. Thursday's game is set for a 3 p.m. start. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
