DAVIS, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis team defeated host UC Davis 4-1 before falling 4-0 to Nevada in the afternoon match Friday at the Golden State Invite.
The Pilots (5-6) took the doubles point from the Aggies (5-7) with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Portland's tandem of Lucas Kimelman and Stefan Skobelev were 6-3 winners, while Tom Garcia and Eli Noel teamed up for a 6-2 victory.
UC Davis picked up their point with a win at the top of the order, but the Pilots were able to put the match to rest. Cade Fernando and Kimelman recorded straight set victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, before Tannor Binder clinched with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win against Dylan Paterson at No. 6. Garcia and Skobelev were both in three set battles when the match was clinched.
The Pilots ran out of gas in the second match against the Wolf Pack (7-2). After dropping a close doubles point, Nevada took advantage of a banged up Portland squad to win. Nikola Keremedchiev and Fernando were 6-4 winners at No. 1 doubles, but Nevada claimed the other two matches to secure the doubles point.
The Pilots pulled Kimelman and Skobelev out of the singles lineup and Nevada would pick up straight set wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match.
"We had a great win this morning against Davis," head coach Aaron Gross said. "There were 20 mile-per-hour wind gusts on their home courts and we played great. On par with how we played against liberty a couple of weeks ago so I'm really proud of how we competed. We had to manage our health this afternoon since we're not used to playing two matches in a day and are carrying a couple of injuries. We still have another match tomorrow so we were able to get the freshmen some experience, but made it tough for us to get the job done against Nevada."
Portland will head to Sacramento for the conclusion of the Golden State Invite on Saturday at 10 a.m. against New Mexico State.
