GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The third varsity eight for Portland Pilots rowing earned the first win of the year at the Sacramento State Invitational, with the rest of the Pilot boats all putting up solid performances.
"This was a solid start to spring racing for us," Portland head coach Gulliver Scott said. "Overall, we have a young team and we learned a lot today. It was great to see our crews successfully execute the elements of racing that we've been working on."
The third varsity eight won their 2000m race with a time of 7:32.3. Emma Hanson was the coxswain for Portland and Megan Eckels the stroke. The first varsity eight and second varsity eight both took third in their races, with the first varsity eight posting a time of 7:08.5 and the second varsity eight a time of 7:31.3. Leahbelle Paladino and Veronica Conklin were the coxswain and stroke for the first varsity eight while Bella Valenzuela and Averie Zealley held the same roles respectively for the second varsity eight. The varsity four closed out the racing with a fourth-place finish and a time of 8:12.1. Natalie Petty was the coxswain and Phoebe Price the stroke.
"The Sac State Invite was a great opportunity to see how we stack up against conference opponents early in the season," Portland captain Rachel Hester said. "All of our boats had strong performances and competitive races. I am excited to see what is to come for our team this year."
The Pilots are back in action next week at the Puget Sound Invite up at American Lake. The Pilots compete in the event on Saturday, March 14. Stay tuned to PortlandPilots.com for more information.
