STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Michail Pervolarakis became the first player in Portland men's tennis history to win the ITA Northwest Regional Championship after defeated California's Jack Malloy in straight sets on Monday.

Pervolarakis won his final three matches – all against players from Cal – in straight sets, after battling through three consecutive three-setters to reach the quarterfinals.

The tournament's No. 2 seed and ranked No. 95 nationally, Pervolarakis posted a 6-1, 7-6 win against the No. 5 seeded Malloy.

"He picked right up where he finished yesterday in playing lights out in the first set," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "His opponent played with nothing to lose in the second set and threw everything at him that he possibly could, but Mike stay composed and worked his way through it to earn the first singles title for the University of Portland in region history. It's a very cool title to have and I know Mike appreciates it, but he has so many bigger things in his tennis future. It's just really exciting to see all these milestones that he has earned through his hard work."

The Limassol, Cyress native knocked off Jacob Brumm in the quarterfinals and then Paul Barretto in the semifinals on Sunday to join elite company in UP history.

Matt Loucks, who reached the finals in 2004, is the only Pilot player to advance to the title match of the prestigious fall event. Last year, Pervolarakis reached the semifinals of the tournament.
