PORTLAND, Ore. --- Jarad vanSchaik scored a goal and added two assists as the Pilots scored three unanswered second-half goals to defeat the Seattle Redhawks 4-2 in a non-conference men’s soccer game on Thursday night at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. vanSchaik’s score was the game-winner and came in the 60th minute.
Trailing 2-1 at the break, the Pilots stepped up the intensity in the second half, outshooting the Redhawks 10-2. In the 53rd minute, Ryan Luke scored the equalizer on a perfectly placed corner kick from vanSchaik. Luke was near the far post where he knocked one in to tie the score at 2-2.
Seven minutes later, it was vanSchaik who finished on a break away to hand the lead back to Portland. In a one-v-one opportunity, the junior midfielder beat SU keeper Ivan Dizdar with a low shot inside the left post.
Sophomore defender Ryan Kawulok then notched some insurance on a free kick from vanSchaik, who was on point on Portland’s set pieces throughout the match. This time the free kick came from near the right sideline and made it through a crowd before Kawulok was able to knock it down and finish inside the right post. It’s the sixth assist on the season for vanSchaik and the fourth goal for Kawulok as UP led 4-2.
The Pilots finished with an 18-8 edge in shots overall, while both teams had five corner kicks on the night.
Portland junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero came through with two saves. Dizdar finished with seven.
UP senior Collen Warner gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the game with an impressive goal from distance. Warner took a pass from freshman Marc Tonkel, turned and buried a shot into the left side of the netting from 35 yards out. Warner and Luke both have a team-best six goals this fall.
The Redhawks then scored twice on two corner kicks about a minute apart to claim the 2-1 half-time lead.
Portland next wraps up the regular season with a West Coast Conference match against the San Francisco Dons on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Merlo Field. UP will honor its four seniors (Drew Chrostek, Logan Emory, Greg Rouse and Warner) with a pre-game ceremony.
