PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior 1B Chase Powell had four RBI’s and the Pilots totaled 15 hits during a 12-2 non-conference win over the Corban College Warriors on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Powell went 2-for-3 before being lifted for a pinch hitter, while freshman SS Kris Kauppila, sophomore OF Craig Smith and sophomore 2B Riley Henricks each had three hits.
Brent Miller (2-0) picks up the win for the Pilots, who used six pitchers on the day. Miller worked 3.0 innings, as was predetermined by the UP coaches, surrendering two runs on four hits. He had one walk and one strikeout.
Relievers Tommy Renda, Nick Bankus, Clayton Shaw, Ben Pressler, Ed Wakefield and Matthew Lange each pitched a scoreless inning for the Pilots (14-9).
The Pilots touched Corban (9-15) starter Nate Hiebert (0-2) for nine runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings. Three relievers followed Hiebert.
Portland scored six runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Smith got the scoring going with solo home run with one out. A few batters later, Powell left the yard with a three-run shot to right field that made it a 4-0 game.
The Pilots then scored on a Corban error before sophomore 3B Matt Mardesich capped the first-inning scoring with an RBI ground-out.
After the Warriors briefly pulled within four runs with a pair of runs in the top of the third, UP scored three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to seal the win.
In the fourth, senior DH Bryant Kraus and Henricks both knocked in a run, while the other came courtesy a wild pitch that helped make it a 9-2 game.
Kraus picked up another RBI in the fifth inning after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Powell then induced an RBI walk before Henricks brought in a run with a single to give the Pilots a 10-run advantage.
UP out-hit Corban 15-4, while the Warriors committed four errors on the day.
Portland next opens play in the West Coast Conference against the Saint Mary’s Gaels this weekend in Moraga, Calif. The Pilots and Gaels are set to play at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
UP’s scheduled home game with Lewis & Clark on Wednesday has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict.
