LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Sophomore setter Madison Smith dished out 22 assists but the Loyola Marymount Lions hit .358 as a team to defeat the Portland Pilots 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-23) Thursday night at the Gersten Pavilion.
Sophomore Rachel Femling, coming off a record setting match last weekend against San Francisco, led the Pilots (8-13, 1-4 WCC) with another strong performance. An outside hitter from Vancouver, Wash., Femling notched six kills on a .714 hitting percentage for Portland and added two blocks.
Portland jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the third set but the Lions (11-8, 3-1 WCC) quickly chipped away at the deficit, using a 10-3 run to take their first lead of the set. The two teams traded points for the remainder of the match, but Loyola Marymount held on at the end to complete the sweep.
The Lions took control early in the first two sets. Olivia Bailey was all over the court for Loyola, notching a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs. Alyse Hensley posted a game-high nine kills while Jasmine Rankins and Felicia Arriola combined for seven service aces.
Senior libero Danielle Dupar recorded 11 digs while junior middle blocker Marissa Plummer led the team with seven kills and three blocks. Portland’s freshmen once again saw significant playing time as Christina Harris recorded five kills and six digs while Mckenzie Oliver had three kills. Monica Jordan had four assists and four digs while Autumn Wedan had one kill.
The Pilots now travel to Malibu, Calif., to take on the Pepperdine Waves (13-5, 4-0 WCC), the last road match for the first round of West Coast Conference play for Portland.
