SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 6 seed Portland Pilots men’s tennis team concluded the WCC Championships in seventh-place by sweeping No. 8 Gonzaga, 4-0, Sunday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The 73rd-ranked doubles team of seniors Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining defeated Gonzaga’s No. 1 team, 8-6, to notch the doubles point for the Pilots. Geoff Hernandez and Nick Wales earned the other doubles win at the No. 3 spot with a convincing 8-3 result.
Up 1-0, the Pilots blazed through the singles competition with three straight wins. Freshman Mike Pigou got things started with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 position. Zivkovic followed with another win in a back-and-forth affair against Roman Dojcak, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.
Bryan Thorp sealed the deal with a straight-set win at the No. 2 position against Conor Feeney. It was a sweet result for Thorp who was defeated by Feeney earlier this season, 7-6, 7-6, on Feb. 12.
Coach Gross’ squad finished the regular season with a 9-8 record (1-0 WCC) and closes out the 2010 season with a 10-10 overall record.
Zivkovic ends his senior campaign for the Pilots with an 11-7 record at the No.1 singles spot.
Junior Daniel Coelho is the only other Pilot to have double-digit wins with 11.
The #73 team of Zivkovic and Schleining lost just four times in eighteen dual competitions this season. Their season-high national ranking was 30th (03-30-2010).
