ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The Denver Pioneers came from behind three times to earn a 3-3 draw with the 16th-ranked Portland Pilots at the New Mexico Invitational on Friday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. All of the scoring came during the second half.
After a scoreless first half, Portland (1-0-2) junior Connor Barbaree got the scoring started with his first goal of the season. Barbaree took a crack from the top of the box, beating the DU (1-1-1) keeper for the 1-0 lead.
But UP’s lead was short-lived as the Pioneers responded with the equalizer just 21 seconds later. Jarod Stigall’s first goal of the season from 18 yards out knotted the score at 1-1.
After Portland went up 2-1 on what was ruled a DU own goal, Stigall once again responded. This time he took a shot from 30 yards out that somehow found the top corner of the net. The own goal came when Portland’s Ricardo Carrillo appeared to be taking a shot that was deflected into the net by a Denver defender.
UP’s Ben Hemphill then gave the lead back to Portland with a goal in the 82nd minute. Barbaree fed Hemphill in the left side of the box, where the sophomore finished for his first goal of the fall. But as was the case all game long, DU had an answer. This time it was Kegan Harkenrider who equalized with a strike in the 85th minute, making it a 3-3 game.
The game settled down during both overtimes as both teams went scoreless.
The Pilots held a 14-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
Portland next faces tournament host and 22nd-ranked New Mexico on Sunday. Kick off between the Pilots and Lobos is set for 12:00 p.m. (Pacific).
