DAVIS, Calif. --- Junior Marissa Plummer notched 10 kills and three service aces but the UC Davis Aggies swept the Portland Pilots 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) Saturday night in the final match of the Aggie Invitational at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. Junior Kati Hronek earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the Pilots concluded their preseason tournament play.
Portland (6-8) head coach Joe Houck was impressed with the play of both the Pilots and the Aggies (8-4), “UC Davis is a very well coached and well disciplined team and they played well all weekend. We had our moments of brilliance but playing at a high level has not been the issue us this preseason, sustaining it has been the challenge.”
The Pilots kept each set close, but the firepower of the Aggies proved too strong. UC Davis recorded 49 kills on a .396 hitting percentage for the match. Hronek and sophomore Kate Bostwick each recorded five kills for the Pilots and sophomore Ariel Usher posted seven.
Three Aggies posted double-digit kill totals, led by Katie Denny with 13. Betsy Sedlak added 11 for UC Davis on a solid .733 hitting percentage. Sedlak, the tournament MVP, entered the week ranked sixth in the nation in hitting percentage and still managed to improve her percentage from .486 to .495 with her performance.
Hronek, who was named the MVP of the Shocker Classic and WCC Co-Player of the Week earlier this season, finished the tournament with 35 kills on a .275 hitting percentage.
Senior libero Danielle Dupar recorded 10 kills in the match. After passing Carlie Price earlier in the day, Dupar finishes the weekend just two digs behind Nikki Rosenfeldt (1,241) for fifth place on the career digs list for the Pilots.
Portland travels to Seattle for their final non-conference road game of the season on Tuesday, September 21. The Pilots then host Trinity Western on Tuesday, September 28, for their first action in the Chiles Center this season.
