LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Senior MB Marissa Plummer led the Pilots with a .357 attacking percentage and added two blocks for the Pilots, but the Loyola Marymount Lions swept the Portland Pilots (25-17, 25-14, 25-23) in a West Coast Conference match Thursday night at the Gersten Pavilion.
The Pilots fall to 8-15 on the season with the loss, leaving their conference record at 2-8 for the year. LMU, meanwhile, improves to 12-11 on the year, evening their WCC record at 5-5.
The Lions contained Portland in the first two sets to take the 2-0 advantage, but the Pilots fought back in the third set. Trailing 12-8, UP regained the serve on an LMU attacking error. Sophomore OH Monica Jordan’s service ace gave the Pilots back-to-back points, kicking off a 5-1 run to tie the set. A block assist a little later in the set by Jordan and Plummer gave the Pilots an 18-17 edge in the set.
Even though junior OH Ariel Usher recorded three kills after UP took the lead, Loyola Marymount thwarted the Pilots rally at the right moment, taking six of the final seven points of the set to seal the match.
Sophomore OH Autumn Wedan just missed a double-double. After posting her first two career double-doubles in consecutive matches earlier this month, Wedan posted 15 kills and nine digs against Gonzaga last weekend. The digs were there tonight for Klamath Falls, Ore., native as she posted 10, but she finished the match with nine kills.
Plummer’s team-high .357 attacking percentage came with six kills and two blocks.
Portland looks to turn the road trip around on Saturday when they travel to Malibu, Calif., to take on the No. 18 Pepperdine Waves. Pepperdine is a perfect 10-0 in conference play this year after beating Gonzaga earlier Thursday evening, but the Pilots took the Waves to five sets in the WCC opener on September 22.
