OMAHA, Neb. --- Creighton starter Jonas Dufek struck out 11 batters en route to a tossing 8.0 innings of shutout baseball as the Portland Pilots dropped their second consecutive game against the Bluejays, 12-0, Saturday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton improves to 19-5 with the victory while the Pilots fall to 10-13.
Dufek (4-0) allowed just five Pilots to reach base on the afternoon. Portland tallied three hits against Dufek with the other two runners reaching via a hit-by-pitch and an error. Freshman Turner Gill notched the only extra base hit of the afternoon for Portland with a double to start the top of the ninth.
Trever Adams provided a bulk of the offense for the Bluejays, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and scoring twice. Creighton’s rightfielder fell a triple shy of the cycle. Alex Staehely went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI as Creighton scored four times in the third inning and seven times in the sixth inning.
Portland junior Kyle Kraus was chased in the sixth inning, finishing with 5.2 innings under his belt. The Pilots’ righty allowed eight runs, all earned, on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two but finished with 11 groundouts compared to just three flyouts.
The Pilots used four relievers on the afternoon with freshman Chad Kjemhus tossing another perfect inning out of the pen. Kjemhus struck out two of the three batters he faced and lowered his ERA to a 1.93.
Creighton outhit the Pilots 12-to-5 with Creighton committing the game’s only error.
Sophomore RHP Chris Johnson (1-1, 4.76 ERA) toes the rubber for Portland in Sunday’s series finale, matching up with Creighton’s Greg Hellhake (2-1, 4.64 ERA).
