PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 19 Oregon State Beavers scored seven runs during the first two innings before cruising to an 11-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots will next set their sights on the West Coast Conference as they welcome the Pepperdine Waves to The Bluff this weekend.
The Beavers (21-7) out-hit the Pilots (10-15) just 7-5, but OSU took advantage of 10 walks issued by Portland’s seven pitchers.
Oregon State jumped out to an early lead by scoring four runs during the top of the first inning without recording a hit. After a hit batter and two straight walks loaded the bases, Parker Berberet brought home the first run by drawing another walk. Jared Norris then picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly before two more runs scored on a throwing error to make it a 4-0 game.
The Beavers didn’t let up during the second frame as Berberet belted a three-run homer to left that gave the Beavers a 7-0 lead.
OSU added three runs in the sixth and another in the ninth.
UP starter Brent Miller (3-2) picks up the loss after not recording an out during the first inning. He was charged with all four of OSU’s first-inning runs.
Following Miller came six relievers out of the UP bullpen, with senior Scott Burris and junior Keeler Brynteson each working 2.0 flawless innings. Both lefties held the Beavs without a hit or a walk, while Brynteson struck out a pair.
Oregon State starter James Nygren (4-1) was solid in 7.2 innings of work, scattering five hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Nygren allowed Portland’s only run during the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior OF Kramer Scott slapped a one-out double down the right field line before advancing to third on a ground-out. He then scored on an RBI single by junior OF Sam Westendorf, who had two of Portland’s hits on the day.
The Pilots and Waves are scheduled to play a three-game series this weekend at Joe Etzel Field, with Friday’s opener set for 3:00 p.m. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
