Lions Elude Loper Led Pilots
PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore middle blocker Bea Loper led Portland with eight kills on a .538 attacking percentage, but the Loyola Marymount Lions left the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 conference win over the Pilots with scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-14.
Senior outside hitter Kate Bostwick got Portland’s (6-17, 0-9 WCC) offense going in the first set with a quartet of kills that buzzed through the blocker’s hands. Loyola Marymount (13-9, 4-5 WCC) managed to contain the rest of Portland’s offense in the set to take the 1-0 advantage.
After the Lions jumped to a large lead in the second set, sophomore libero Katie Mardesich and junior outside hitter Autumn Wedan led an offensive resurgence.
Starting with Mardesich’s serve, the Pilots ran off a 10-3 run that featured three Wedan blocks. Wedan also recorded two kills during the run, aided by Mardesich’s first ball presence.
Mardesich finished with 13 digs on the afternoon.
Portland now heads to San Francisco for a 6:30 p.m. match against the Dons on Thursday. The Pilots return to Portland next Saturday for a 3 p.m. match against the BYU Cougars.
