Gaels Top Pilots on Senior Day
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Rachel Femling and Ariel Usher each accomplished significant statistical feats on senior day. Jessica Nguyen and Kate Bostwick were also honored during the pregame ceremony prior to Portland’s 3-0 loss to the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Saturday afternoon (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) in the Chiles Center.
Usher, who led the Pilots with 12 kills on a .310 attacking percentage, was the first of the dynamic duo to record Pilot history on the day. On the first play of the second set, Usher tied Gretchen Sanders for fifth place on Portland’s career kills list. Midway through the set, she passed Sanders with her 1,105th career kill to bring UP within two at 13-11.
Femling then accomplished her own feat halfway through the third set, teaming up with Usher for her fifth block of the match. Compiling 14 blocks during this weekend’s matches, Femling sits at 100 blocks for the season, becoming just the second Pilot since 1996 to record triple-digit blocks in the season. Marissa Plummer finished last season with 104 blocks.
Nguyen, meanwhile, finished one off her career-high in digs with 14 and Monica Jordan tallied a double-double. Bea Loper collected 10 kills on just 16 swings (.562), joining Usher as the only other Pilot with double-digit kills.
Bostwick finished the match with four digs, two kills, and two assists in her final Chiles Center appearance.
Portland (6-23, 0-15) has just one match remaining, a Thursday affair at Gonzaga. Saint Mary’s (15-10, 10-4 WCC), which is receiving votes in the coaches poll, has a pair of West Coast Conference matches next weekend.
