Usher and Bostwick Spark Pilots Offense, but Santa Clara Claims Victory
SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- Senior outside hitters Ariel Usher and Kate Bostwick re-energized the Portland Pilots offense, but the Santa Clara Broncos held on for a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) victory over the visiting Pilots Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center.
Usher hit .556 with a team-high 17 kills as Bostwick tied a career-high with four service aces in the West Coast Conference match.
Usher was the Pilots (6-21, 0-13 WCC) go-to hitter from the beginning, spraying 11 kills between the first two sets on just 13 swings for a .846 attacking percentage. With seven kills in the first set, Usher carried the offensive attack and kept Portland within striking distance.
Complimenting Usher’s firepower against the Broncos (19-8, 8-4 WCC) was Bostwick, who turned in a solid all around performance with five kills, 10 digs, and four service aces. This marks the third time in her career that she’s registered four aces in a match. It is also the third time this season that Bostwick has recorded three or more aces in a match.
Portland returns to the Chiles Center for the final two home matches of the season as the San Diego Toreros and Saint Mary’s Gaels come to town. Thursday’s match against San Diego is at 7 p.m. Saturday’s match is at 1 p.m., with seniors from both Portland and Saint Mary’s being recognized prior to the match.
