Beth Carey Inks NLI to Join Pilots Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Looking to solidify its blocking rotation, the Portland Pilots volleyball team has added NJCAA All-American Beth Carey via transfer, announced Portland head coach Joe Houck on Thursday.
Carey, a 6-3 middle blocker from Adelaide, South Australia, joins the Pilots after a successful stint with the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles, finishing sixth at the National Tournament last year.
“Beth is very well equipped to contribute to our program on and off the court,” Houck said of Carey. “Her experience and athleticism are tremendous, and her leadership will be a valuable addition to our team.”
As a sophomore last season, she earned NJCAA All-American Second Team honors along with AVCA Second Team Honors while averaging 2.39 kills/set and 0.93 blocks/set. Carey also led the team with 48 service aces on the season.
“Beth solidifies our lineup in the middle and is a versatile offensive player who can be a wall defensively at the net,” Houck added. “She has had a tremendously successful career at CSI and we are thrilled to have her continue on here at UP.”
Carey carries national team experience with her, as well, captaining the South Australian U21 team in 2009 and 2010 after occupying the same role for the Australian Junior team in 2007 and 2008.
Carey is the second newcomer the Pilots have lined up for the 2012 fall season as
Sarah O’Conner signed an NLI during the fall signing period.
