LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Loyola Marymount Lions scored two runs in the fourth inning, two more in the seventh and another in the eighth to claim a 5-0 win over the Portland Pilots in the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series at Page Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Lions took two of three from the Pilots during the weekend.
Three LMU (18-17, 7-5 WCC) pitchers held the Portland (21-14, 8-7 WCC) bats in check for most of the afternoon, allowing just six hits during the shutout. Starter John Lally (3-2) gets the win after surrendering four hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Reliever Aaron Griffin tossed two scoreless innings, and Bret Dahlson worked a scoreless ninth.
Portland starter Chris Johnson (2-2) is saddled with the loss. Johnson was charged with three runs, two earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings. He fanned six and was followed by four UP relievers.
LMU scored its first two runs on a Kyle Raubinger single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Colton Plaia scored from second on the hit, while Alex Guthrie scored all the way from first, courtesy a Portland throwing error.
The Lions then scored two more runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Nick Devian was hit by a pitch, allowing Joey Boney to trot home from third. Then following a strikeout, David Edwards scored LMU’s fourth run when he raced home on a wild pitch.
LMU’s insurance run in the eighth came on an RBI ground-out by Raubinger.
Nick Armenta had two of Portland’s six hits, while the Lions finished with seven hits. The Pilots committed the game’s only error.
The Pilots next return to Portland for five straight home games at Joe Etzel Field, beginning with a visit from the Washington Huskies at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Seattle then comes to town on Wednesday before Portland welcomes the San Diego Toreros to The Bluff for a three-game WCC series during the weekend.
