ANAHEIM, Calif. – Former Portland Pilots shortstop Chad Stevens has earned his call-up to the show, with the Los Angeles Angels adding him to their MLB roster on Thursday. Stevens becomes the first Pilot since Cooper Hummel in 2022 to earn the call to the big leagues. He will be on the active roster for the Angels game in Atlanta tonight against the Braves at 4:15 p.m. (PT).
Stevens played for the Pilots from 2018-21, batting .291 in 170 career games with 198 career hits, 14 home runs, 46 doubles and 90 RBI. He led the Pilots twice in batting average and hit a career-best .333 his senior year in 49 games with eight home runs, 19 doubles and 29 RBI. His 19 doubles were, at the time, the most by a Pilot since Kris Kauppila in 2009. Stevens twice earned All-WCC honors, making the second team in 2019 and the first team in 2021. In 2019, his 46 runs scored were the most by a Pilot since Kauppila in 2009 while his 218 at bats were the most since 2008.
Stevens was taken in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, being the first Pilot at the time since 2018 to be drafted. He finished his college career ranked seventh in program history in doubles (46), 11th in runs scored (118), 12th in stolen bases (32), 13th in total bases (294) and 15th in hits (198).
Stevens has hit .249 in his MiLB career with 53 home runs and 225 RBI's, most recently playing for the Salt Lake Bees, a Triple-A Affiliate of the Angels. In 72 games this season with Salt Lake, he's hit .307 with an OPS of .925, adding 14 home runs and 43 RBI on 81 hits.
The Pilots have had 69 players drafted in their program's history and 10 since Geoff Loomis took over as head coach in 2016. Stevens will become the 11th Pilot all-time to make his Major League debut. Last year, the Pilots had three players taken in the first 15 rounds for the first time in program history, with right-handed pitchers Sam Stuhr, Nick Brink and Joey Gartrell being taken in the fifth, seventh and 15th rounds, respectively.
