Box Score
SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Washington Huskies scored once in the first inning, added another run in the fifth and crossed the plate again in the sixth to claim a 3-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark. The Pilots left 10 runners stranded on base, while the Huskies held a slight 8-7 edge in hits.
The Pilots (25-20) got runners on the corners in the first inning and loaded the bases during the second, but Portland ultimately could not push across a run against UW (27-21) starter Aaron West. West escaped both threats with an inning-ending strikeout.
The Huskies, meanwhile, would score all the support West and four relievers would need with a run in the bottom of the first. Jayce Ray led off the frame with a base hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, reached third on a single and would score on a sacrifice fly by Chase Anselment.
B.K. Santy scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Joe Meggs drove in Washington’s third and final run with an RBI single in the sixth.
West improves to 7-5 with the win, while Joshua Frenendall worked a scoreless ninth to pick up save number nine on the season.
Portland starter Matt McCallister (3-3) is saddled with the loss after allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings. He allowed four hits and a walk, while also striking out one. Four relievers followed McCallister, with Brandon Snyder getting charged with UW’s third run.
UP’s seven hits came from seven different players.
The Pilots next return to the West Coast Conference as they travel to Spokane, Wash., this weekend for a three-game series against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Pilots and Bulldogs open the series with a 6 p.m. game on Friday night at the Patterson Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, while Sunday’s finale will begin at 1 p.m.
