LOGAN, Utah --- Portland sophomore outside hitter Emily Liger registered a career-high 10 kills on a .467 attacking percentage as the Portland Pilots lost a 3-1 match to the Weber State Wildcats on Friday afternoon at the Smith Spectrum. Liger added a career-high three blocks coming off the bench in the second match of the Utah State Invitational.
Seniors Rachel Femling and Ariel Usher also posted solid outings for Portland (0-2), each registering eight kills on attacking percentages better than .400. Femling (.429) contributed seven blocks and two service aces while Usher (.400) added four blocks. As a team, the Pilots posted nine service aces and nine blocks.
The day, however, belonged to the native of Everett, Wash. Liger registered her first kill late in the second set as part of an 11-3 Portland run, allowing the Pilots to run away with the set and even the match at 1-1.
While Weber State (1-0) chipped away at Portland’s momentum in the third set, Liger stepped up to record three kills in the span of four Portland points. After subbing back into the rotation with the Pilots up 15-13, Liger added back-to-back kills to expand the lead to four. Liger, who only attempted seven attacks during the 2011 season, continued her assault on the Wildcats, tallying two more kills in a set eventually taken by Weber State.
Junior outside hitter Autumn Wedan added 10 kills for the Pilots, while setters Monica Jordan (18) and Lexi Dempsey (10) each posted double-digit assist totals. Sophomore libero Jacky Rodriguez had 16 digs and three assists.
Portland concludes its stay at the Utah State Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. (PST) against Southern Utah and ends with a 4:00 p.m. (PST) affair with Utah.
