Box Score Pilots Open Penn State Classic with Loss to No. 4 Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --- Fresh off a promising match against the No. 5 Washington Huskies, the Portland Pilots played their second consecutive match against a top five opponent as the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions handed the Pilots a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-12) loss Friday night at Recreational Hall.
Junior outside hitter Autumn Wedan led the Pilots (5-7) in kills for the second straight match. After posting an impressive 17 kills on Tuesday, Wedan deposited eight kills against a stingy Penn State (8-1) defense.
Sophomores Jacky Rodriguez and Katie Mardesich were busy for Portland defensively, recording seven and six digs, respectively.
Portland wraps up its stay at the Penn State Classic with a back-to-back Saturday matches. The Pilots play Eastern Illinois (3-7) at 10 a.m. (PST) and then immediately conclude the tournament against Duquesne (9-4) at 1 p.m. Duquesne swept Eastern Illinois earlier Friday.
