Game One Box Score I
Game Two Box Score
STARKVILLE, Miss. --- Starting pitcher Kurt Yinger was masterful on the mound for the Pilots, but the No.5 Mississippi State Bulldogs took advantage of Portland’s bullpen to claim a 6-0 win in the second game of double header at Polk-DeMent Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs (4-0) won the first game 7-1.
Yinger worked seven solid innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits. He also struck out three and walked just one.
But Yinger (0-1) is saddled with the loss because Mississippi State used four pitchers who combined to hold Portland scoreless. The Pilots left a pair of runners stranded during both the first and second innings, while perhaps UP’s best chance to score came in the top of the eighth inning.
Trailing 2-0, Ben Grubb roped a double into the left-field corner before Jeff Melby drew a one-out walk. But the Bulldogs turned to their bullpen and Ben Bracewell quickly ended the threat with a strike out and a pop out.
The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second and Adam Frazier scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to give MSU the slim lead. The Bulldogs then took full advantage in the bottom of the eighth, after Yinger had left the game, by scoring four runs.
Luis Pollorena (1-0) threw 4.1 innings to earn the win.
In the first game of the double header, Portland freshman right-hander Zach Torson held the Bulldogs scoreless during the first three innings of his first collegiate start. Torson ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth when he walked a pair of batters with one out. Jacob Robson then broke the scoreless tie with a RBI single to left field.
A few batters later, Frazier tagged a two-run triple to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. And then after a hit batter and a walk, Kody Watts relieved Torson and got out of the bases-loaded jam by inducing an inning-ending fly out to left field.
The Bulldogs would follow with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
The Pilots tried to make it interesting in the top of the ninth when Cody Lenahan singled, Zack McCoy drew a walk and Melby tallied a base hit to load the bases with nobody out. Lenahan would then cross the plate with Portland’s first run on a fielder’s choice.
Following a walk to load the bases once again, MSU went to the bullpen to get Pollorena, who promptly struck out Brian Frattali for the second out. Kramer Scott then lined out to second base to end the game.
Torson (0-1) takes the loss after tossing 3.2 innings. He struck out four and allowed four hits. Watts pitched an inning and Colin Feldtman worked the final 3.1 innings.
Kendall Graveman (1-0) held the Pilots scoreless during 6.1 innings to notch his first victory of 2013. Pollorena replaced Trevor Fitts, who allowed Portland’s run and tossed 2.0 innings total.
Melby had a pair of hits for the Pilots, while Kramer Scott and Beau Fraser both had two hits in the second game. The Pilots left 19 runners stranded on the bases during both games combined.
The Pilots (0-4) next return to the Pacific Northwest for a non-conference road game against the Seattle Redhawks on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash.
