PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots used a five-run seventh inning to rally past the Utah Valley Wolverines for a 7-3 win in a non-conference baseball game played on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Utah Valley used five pitchers during that seventh inning.
The Pilots, who next travel to No. 5 Oregon on Tuesday, improve to 2-6 on the year, while the Wolverines drop to 3-4.
Trailing 3-2, freshman short stop Lucas Hunter began the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off walk. New pitcher Danny Geddes then walked senior Ben Grubb before senior Beau Fraser laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners to second and third.
Hunter then trotted home with the tying run on an infield single off the bat of junior Chet Thompson. After another pitching change, the Pilots took the lead when senior Kramer Scott grounded into a fielder’s choice to second base, which allowed Grubb to cross home plate.
Then following another pitching change and another walk, junior Colin Sowers drilled a single to left field, scoring another Portland run. Sophomore Cody Lenahan then capped the scoring in the inning with a hard-hit, two-run single up the middle to make it a 7-3 game.
Portland senior reliever Jeremy Burright followed with a scoreless top of the eighth before giving way in the ninth inning to freshman Bill Sahlinger, who retired all three batters he faced to earn his first career save.
Burright (1-1) takes the win, and Portland got another solid outing from a starting pitcher as sophomore Kurt Yinger worked into the seventh and allowed just three runs. Yinger struck out five, walked one and scattered eight hits.
Beddes (0-1) was charged with two runs in the seventh to pick up the loss.
The Pilots claimed the game’s first run when senior Kramer Scott scored from second base on a single to right field by senior Brian Frattali. Scott had led off the game with a single before alertly advancing to second when UVU pitcher Blake Krahenbuhl had the ball behind the mound with the play seemingly over.
The Wolverines took the lead with a pair of two-out RBI hits in the fifth. Riley White tied the score with a single to center field and Michael Krueger gave the lead to Utah Valley with a double to right field that scored two runs, making it 3-1.
Portland got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when Fraser followed a double by Grubb with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Krahenbuhl pitched 4.0 innings, allowing the two runs on six hits and two walks, before Utah Valley turned to its bullpen.
Both teams finished with nine hits, while eight different players registered a hit for the Pilots. Sowers had two hits.
First pitch on Tuesday for the Ducks and Pilots is scheduled for 6 p.m. at PK Park in Eugene.
