SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland starter Matt McCallister earned the win and Michael Lucarelli and Kramer Scott each knocked in a run as the Pilots defeated the Washington Huskies 4-2 in a game that was called after six innings because of rain on Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark. The game, which featured a 44-minute rain delay, was played in wet and windy conditions.
Reliever Colin Feldtman notched his second career save as the Pilots improve to 7-13. Washington drops to 4-15.
In the top of the third inning, the Pilots were able to score the game’s first two runs after their first two hitters were retired on strikeouts. Scott reached base on a throwing error, Cody Lenahan walked and Beau Fraser also reached on a throwing error, which allowed Scott to score. Lenahan then scored on a wild pitch and the Pilots lead 2-0.
UW answered with a run in the bottom of the third, which ended a 33-inning scoring drought for the Huskies.
The Pilots got the run back in the fourth inning to once again make it a two-run cushion. Ben Grubb, who had previously doubled and moved over to third base on a single by Nick Armenta, scored on a bunt by Lucarelli to make it a 3-1 game.
Then after the lengthy rain delay in the top of the sixth inning, the Pilots scored their fourth and final run when Scott drew a bases loaded walk with two outs.
Feldtman then found himself in a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, but he allowed just one run in before ending the threat and the game.
McCallister (1-1) registers his first win of the season after going 5.0 innings. The senior allowed just three hits and he struck out a pair.
Washington starter Tyler Davis (0-3) lasted just 3.0 innings, Zach Wright followed out of the bullpen and worked 2.2 innings and Jacob Coats recorded the final out in the sixth.
The Pilots next head to the Bay Area to open the West Coast Conference scheduled with three games against the San Francisco Dons. Friday’s series opener is set for 3 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond.
Saturday’s game will be played at 3:30 p.m. at AT&T Park, home of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, and Sunday’s finale is set for 1 p.m. back on the USF campus.
