Box Score
CORVALLIS, Ore. --- After Portland had taken a one-run lead, the No. 6 Oregon State Beavers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and four more in the seventh before holding on for a 7-5 victory over the Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night at Goss Stadium. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Pilots, who drop to 11-17 overall.
After Oregon State (23-4) had taken a 7-2 lead, the Pilots made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning. With one out and Caleb Whalen on first, pinch hitter Zack McCoy singled to give the Pilots a pair of base runners with only one out. An OSU throwing error then allowed Whalen to score and put runners on the corners with the Pilots now trailing by four.
Michael Lucarelli then brought home McCoy on a fielder’s choice, which pulled Portland within 7-4. And then after Lucarelli had stolen second base, Colin Sowers slapped a two-out single up the middle to score Lucarelli and bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the form of Jeff Melby.
But that’s when Oregon State reliever Scott Shultz was finally able to end the late Portland rally by getting Melby to hit a grounder to the short stop Andy Peterson. Peterson then tossed it to second base for the force out and the final out of the game.
Shultz picks up his sixth save of the season despite allowing the three late runs. He surrendered three hits and a walk in 3.0 innings of work, while striking out three. Reliever Cole Brocker (1-0) who spelled starter Dan Child with one out in the fourth inning, takes the win. Brocker allowed a run on four hits in 2.2 innings. Child also gave up a run.
Portland starter Matt McCallister overcame some early troubles to toss 5.1 effective innings. He was charged with two OSU runs on four hits and two walks before giving way to the Portland bullpen. Colin Feldtman (2-1), who is saddled with the loss, allowed one run, Brand Snyder was charged with three and J.R. Bunda also yielded a run.
Trailing 1-0 early in the game, the Pilots responded with the tying run in the top of the fourth inning and the go-ahead run in the fifth. In the fourth, Beau Fraser greeted Brocker with a base hit to center field, which advanced Melby to second base. Melby then took third on a wild pitch before scoring the tying run on a two-out single by Kramer Scott.
With the score tied 1-1 an inning later, Lucarelli sent a one-out double down the right field line. He then moved over to third base on another wild pitch from Brocker before crossing the plate to give the Pilots the 2-1 lead, courtesy a two-out single from Melby.
The Beavers re-claimed the lead an inning later with RBI singles from Jared Casper and Peterson to give Oregon State the 3-2 advantage. OSU then added some breathing room with a four-run seventh, which was capped by a two-run homer from Jake Rodriguez.
OSU, which was the 11th ranked opponent for the Pilots this season, out-hit Portland 11-8 on the night.
The Pilots next head north for a non-conference game against the Seattle Redhawks on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash.
