MORAGA, Calif. --- The Saint Mary’s Gaels registered a 4-0 win over the Portland Pilots in the second game of a three-game West Coast Conference series played at Louis Guisto Field on Saturday afternoon. Four different Gaels picked up an RBI, while the Pilots were limited to just five hits.
One of those hits belonged to Jeff Melby, who has at least one hit during 17 of his last 18 games.
Portland drops to 13-26 overall with the loss and is now 5-9 in the WCC. Saint Mary’s improves to 13-25 and to 4-7 in the conference.
SMC’s Jordan Mills (3-3) went the distance on the hill to notch the complete game shutout. He K’d nine, walked only one and surrendered those five Pilot hits. Mills and the Gaels didn’t allow a base runner to reach third base.
Portland starter Kurt Yinger (2-4) takes the loss after allowing just two runs. He did give up 10 hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out five. Freshman reliever Jackson Lockwood was charged with a pair of runs, one earned, and Chad Kjemhus tossed a scoreless eighth.
Markus Melgosa was responsible for the Gaels’ first run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. In the fifth, Anthony Villa scored on a double by Shawn O’Brien to make it a 2-0 game.
Collin Ferguson dove in a run with a double in the bottom of the seventh before Darian Ramage added a little insurance with a sacrifice fly.
The Gaels finished with 13 hits.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
