MORAGA, Calif. --- The Saint Mary’s Gaels cruised to a 14-2 win over the Portland Pilots in the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series played on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels scored five runs during the second and fifth innings en route to the win.
The Pilots (13-27, 5-10 WCC) next set their sights on top-10 ranked Oregon, which visits Joe Etzel Field for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Gaels (14-25, 5-7 WCC) took command of the game on Sunday with that five-run second. Ricky Boas had a two-run double during the outburst before Brenden Kalfus drove in three runs with a double of his own.
Portland’s Brian Frattali knocked in a run in the top of the fourth inning before Saint Mary’s scored one in the bottom of the fourth, five in the fifth, another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Kalfus notched two more RBI’s during the fifth inning with a single.
Ryan Barr scored Portland’s second run in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Cody Lenahan.
Portland used five pitchers on the afternoon with starter Matt McCallister (1-4) taking the loss. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.
Saint Mary’s also used five pitchers. Starter Ryan Brockett (3-5) worked into the sixth inning and held the Pilots to just one run on four hits. He struck out eight and walked three.
Jeff Melby finished with two of Portland’s seven hits giving him at least one hit during 18 of his last 19 games. He has reached base safely in 19 straight games.
Kalfus finished with six RBI’s. Colin Ferguson had a four-hit afternoon as the Gaels finished with 14 hits as a team.
