Box Score
BELLEVUE, Wash. --- Junior Colin Sowers had a pair of base-loaded doubles and the Pilots combined for a season-high 18 hits as Portland cruised to a 13-6 win over the Seattle Redhawks in a non-conference baseball game played at Bannerwood Park on Wednesday afternoon. Portland (12-17) used a six-run second inning and a four-run third to jump out to a 10-0 lead.
With two runs already in during the top of the second, Sowers came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out. His drive to left-center field cleared the bases and gave the Pilots a cozy 5-0 lead.
An inning later Sowers again found himself at the plate with the bases full of Pilots. Sowers again sent a ball into the left-center gap, with two runs scoring this time. Jeff Melby followed with a sacrifice fly and Cody Lenahan added an RBI single and the rout was on.
The Pilots would push three more runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning after the Redhawks had scored their first two runs in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, Michael Lucarelli had a two-run single before scoring on a base hit off the bat of Bo Cornish to make it 13-2.
Seattle (10-18) would score two runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the seventh inning.
Portland starter Kody Watts (1-2) earns his first win during his longest outing of the season. The sophomore right-hander struck out three in 5.0 innings, while yielding four runs on six hits. Four UP relievers followed Watts on the mound.
Seattle starter Kyle Doyle (2-2) lasted just an inning-and-a-third, allowing all six runs in the second inning. Relievers Will Dennis and Jake Chutney didn’t fare much better, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits during a combined 3.0 innings of work. Four Seattle relievers would hold the Pilots scoreless during the game’s final 5.0 innings.
Lucarelli, Cornish and Caleb Whalen each had three hits on the afternoon, while Lucarelli knocked in three runs.
The Pilots, who have won four of their last five games, next return home to host Gonzaga for a three-game West Coast Conference series this weekend at Joe Etzel Field. Friday’s opener is set for 3 p.m., while first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
