SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The San Diego Toreros scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back en route to a 22-5 win over the Portland Pilots in the West Coast Conference series finale played on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park. The Pilots (17-32, 8-13 WCC) did take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Toreros (31-21, 15-9 WCC) responded in a big way.
The win gives San Diego the three-game series sweep in what was Portland’s final WCC road series of the season.
San Diego’s Kris Bryant, the nation’s leading home run hitter, finished with two long flies on the day. His first was a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning and his second was a solo shot in the seventh.
Austin Green also belted a pair of homers as the Toreros finished with six home runs on the day. Green had six RBI’s, while Bryant had five hits in seven at-bats.
Brian Frattali knocked in Portland’s run in the top of the first with a single up the middle that scored Nick Armenta. The Pilots also scored a run in the top of the fifth inning courtesy a solo home run by Ben Grubb, who leads the team with five homers this season.
Portland added three runs in the top of the ninth. Zack McCoy scored on an error and freshman Clay Mott drove in two runs with a single to right field.
San Diego starter Dylan Covey (4-4) earns the win after holding the Pilots to two runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Portland’s Matt McCallister (2-5) takes the loss. The right-handed starter was one of five pitchers used by the Pilots.
The Pilots finished with 12 hits total as Grubb, McCoy, Mott and Chet Thompson each had two hits.
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from Washington for a non-conference game on Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
