PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland freshman starter Jackson Lockwood allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings and Ben Grubb drove in three runs as the Portland Pilots cruised past the Washington Huskies 9-3 in a non-conference baseball game played on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Kramer Scott added a two-run triple for the Pilots, who improve to 18-32 on the year.
The Pilots scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second to jump out to an early 8-0 lead against the Huskies (19-31). Grubb had the big hit during the first, coming through with a two-run double down the left field line that scored both Nick Armenta and Scott.
Caleb Whalen and Zack McCoy would follow with RBI singles to hand the Pilots an early four-run cushion.
That lead would grow the next inning when Scott drilled his third triple of the year deep into the left-center gap. Grubb, the very next batter, hit a triple of his own that scored Scott and gave the Pilots a comfortable lead. Grubb would then trot home on a sac fly by Brian Frattali.
The lead was more than enough for Lockwood (1-0), who yielded just one run, while striking out four. It’s the first career win for the right-hander, who at one point retired 11 of 12 batters, covering the fourth through seventh innings.
Reliever Colin Feldtman allowed a pair of runs in during the eighth inning before new pitcher Kody Watts escaped a bases loaded jam to end the threat. Watts then retired the Huskies in order in the ninth.
Washington starter Dae Yang Kim (1-2) takes the loss after allowing the four Portland runs in the bottom of the first. Reliever Alex Nesbitt surrendered the four runs in the second, while the ninth run went against Matt Lunde. Zach Wright and Tyler Kane combined to hold the Pilots scoreless during the final 2.1 innings.
Portland’s final run in the bottom of the sixth inning came on a run-scoring single by Armenta.
The Pilots received solid defensive play as both Scott, in left field, and shortstop Michael Lucarelli made outstanding diving catches. Portland out-hit its Pac-12 neighbors from the north 11-7 and the win gives the Pilots a two-game, season-series sweep of the Huskies.
Portland next welcomes the Pepperdine Waves to Joe Etzel Field this weekend for the final West Coast Conference series of the season. Friday’s series opener is set for 3 p.m.
