PORTLAND, Ore. --- Ten Portland Pilots were recognized prior to the game as part of Senior Day, but the Pepperdine Waves never looked back from a three run first en route to a 6-4 win Sunday at Joe Etzel Field. The game was the final West Coast Conference game this season for both teams.
Senior Brian Frattali kept the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh, plating a pair with a two-out, two-strike double down the right field line to chase Pepperdine starter Aaron Brown. Portland (18-35, 8-16 WCC) had loaded the bases earlier in the inning, scratching across a run on a grounder by senior Ben Grubb.
Reliever Eric Karch escaped the jam, however, ending the inning with a questionable third strike call.
The Waves (27-24, 13-11 WCC) got one run back in the eighth with a bases loaded, infield single from Sam Meyer. Michael Swanner then picked up his second save of the day with a perfect but rocky ninth for his 14th save of the season.
Brown (6-3) set the plate for the Waves with a leadoff single in the first. After the Waves loaded the bases, Brown came in to score on a fielder’s choice attempt to give himself the 1-0 lead. The Waves would add two more in the frame.
Portland finally got to Brown in the fifth as junior Zack McCoy legged out a double on a flyball to right center. Sophomore Michael Lucarelli ripped the next pitch past the glove of defensive wizard Austin Davidson for an RBI single down the left field line.
Senior Matt McCallister (2-6) bounced back after the first few innings, finishing with 7.0 innings while giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk. The righty also fanned seven on the afternoon.
In addition to
Brian Frattali (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and
Matt McCallister (Phoenix, Ariz.), eight other Pilot players and the team manager/social media coordinator
Sam Bridgman were recognized in an on-field ceremony prior to the game. Combined, the group has helped in the resurgence of the baseball program.
Ben Grubb (Sequim, Wash.) finished 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Nick Armenta (Clovis, Calif.) and Beau Fraser (Aptos, Calif.) each picked up a hit in their final home game.
Kramer Scott (Edmonds, Wash.) , meanwhile, scored a run. Transfer
Jeremy Burright (Albany, Ore.) also made an appearance, but was unable to retire either batter he faced.
JR Bunda (Wahiawa, Hawai’i) and
Jeff Melby (Bellevue, Wash.) also partook in Senior Day, although injuries prevented either from suiting up.
Portland’s season concludes with a nonconference affair on Monday against Washington State. The Pilots and Cougars will meet in Pasco, Wash. for a noon game with Jackson Lockwood expected to toe the rubber.
