Box Score (PDF)Sports 910 Highlights (MP3)Four Pilots Reach Double Figures in Exhibition Win Over Concordia-IrvinePORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore point guard Alec Wintering made 15-of-17 free throws and scored a game-high 21 points as the Portland Pilots defeated the Concordia-Irvine Eagles 90-81 in an exhibition game Saturday night at the Chiles Center. Wintering led four Pilots in double figures as Portland overcame a one-point halftime deficit to the NAIA power.
Junior guard Bryce Pressley filled the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Senior Volodymyr Gerun, who started in the post, finished with 13 points and four blocked shots, while senior guard Kevin Bailey added 10 points.
Concordia-Irvine was led by Stephen Grosey's 16 points. Matt Scott added 15 points, while Nate Amundsen and Martin Thomas chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Portland led for much of the first half despite committing 13 turnovers in the period and allowing seven three-pointers by the Eagles. Amundsen's triple with 22 seconds left in the half put the Eagles on top by a 40-39 margin.
The Pilots took better care of the ball in the second half – committing just four turnovers – and were able to pull away in the closing minutes.
Senior guard Bobby Sharp broke a 70-70 with his second three-pointer of the night at the 5:42 mark and Portland would hold on thanks to some clutch free throw shooting. The Pilots made 7-of-8 free throws over the final 2:31 seal the victory. Wintering made 13-of-14 from the stripe in the second half.
Portland shot 50 percent from the field, made 4-of-12 three-pointers and 28-of-33 free throws. Concordia-Irvine finished at 42 percent from the floor, 12-of-26 from beyond the arc, and 15-of-21 from the charity stripe.
The Pilots had a 36-26 edge in the paint and 10-2 margin in fast break points. Portland's size also proved advantageous with a 39-27 rebounding margin.
It was the first Division I game action for five Pilots. Freshmen D'Marques Tyson, Gabe Taylor, Philipp Hartwich and Jason Todd all made first half appearances, as did junior college transfer Max Livingston.
Portland will open its 2014-15 regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 against the Concordia (Ore.) Cavaliers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
