THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots step out of conference on Tuesday to host the Seattle Redhawks at 3 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
• The Pilots then travel to Spokane, Wash., to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs in their final West Coast Conference road series of the season, which begins on Thursday at 6 p.m.; Friday's game is also set for 6 p.m., while Saturday's finale will begin at 12 p.m.
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • Last weekend at Joe Etzel Field, the San Diego Toreros defeated Portland on Friday and on Sunday, but the Pilots rallied for a walk-off win on Saturday.
• After coming from behind multiple times on Saturday, the Pilots entered the bottom of the ninth trailing by one.
• After the first two batters were retired, both Davis Tominaga and Devin Kopas reached with two-strike singles, giving the Pilots runners on the corners.
• Chet Thompson then sent a grounder to second that was booted by the USD second baseman, allowing the tying run to score.
• Michael Lucarelli then gave the Pilots the dramatic win with a game-winning, RBI single to center field.
• Previously, the Pilots dropped a pair of mid-week non-conference games to the No. 25 Oregon Ducks.
• On Tuesday, the Ducks jumped out to an early lead before winning 15-10 in Eugene.
• Caleb Whalen had a home run and six RBI's during the loss, which matches the fourth most RBI's a game in program history.
• The Ducks and Pilots then made the trek to Portland to play again on Wednesday, which was a pitcher's duel won 3-0 by Oregon.
• Whalen had three hits on Wednesday and is currently riding a career-best 13-game hitting streak.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Caleb Whalen is in the middle of a career-long 13-game hitting streak, during which he's batting .396 (17-for-40) to raise his average on the season to a team-best .309; the streak began at Pepperdine on March 28.
• Whalen leads the team in most offensive categories, including hits (43), home runs (4), doubles (10), triples (3) and runs scored (19).
• Whalen currently ranks third all-time at UP with 12 career triples, which is just two shy of Larry Farrell's (1958-61) all-time program career record of 14 triples.
• His six RBI's last Tuesday at Oregon are tied for the fourth most in a game in program history and it's the most RBI's by a Pilot since 2009, when Garrett Queen also drove in six against Hawai'i.
• UP's 13-game losing streak earlier this season was the longest losing streak since also dropping 13 straight during the 2004 season.
• Davis Tominaga registered the second complete-game win by a UP freshman pitcher this season when he went the distance during a 9-1 win at Santa Clara on April 4; the right-hander allowed just four hits, struck out eight and walked only one, while adding an RBI single at the plate.
• Fellow freshman pitcher Austin Kelly, who hails from Happy Valley, Ore., and had a stellar prep career at Clackamas High School, was recently named Oregon's 2013 Prep Baseball Player of the year at the 2013 Oregon Sports Awards; Kelly has UP's other complete-game win this spring.
• Portland features a young pitching staff with only two seniors in the regular rotation of starters and relievers.
• The Pilots opened the season with a 1-0 win at then-12th ranked and defending national champion UCLA on Friday, Feb. 14.
• Portland scored the only run of the game against the Bruins when Caleb Whalen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning.
• UP starter Travis Radke and three relievers combined to hold the Bruins to just four hits, while recording 12 strikeouts.
• The Pilots were picked to finish seventh in a pre-season poll of the WCC's 10 head coaches, while Radke was selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
• Head coach Chris Sperry, a former standout catcher/infielder for the Pilots, notched career win No. 301 last year when Portland defeated LMU 6-3 in LA on April 21.
• Sperry, who has 333 career wins in 16+ years at the helm of the Pilots, trails only long-time Portland coach Joe Etzel, who compiled 378 career wins in 21 seasons (1966-86).
