THIS WEEK • The Pilots host the 2014 Nike Portland Invitational this weekend, which will feature the Washington Huskies, Miami Hurricanes and San Diego State Aztecs at Merlo Field.
• On Friday, the Huskies will face the Aztecs at 4:30 p.m. before the Pilots host the Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
• Then on Sunday, Washington and Miami will start the day at 12 p.m., while Portland and SDSU follows at 2:30 p.m.
• The Nike Portland Invitational has been held regularly on the UP campus since 1992 and Washington has been a part of 17 previous Nike Invites.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots traveled to the Husky Nike Invitational last weekend in Seattle and defeated Dartmouth 1-0 on Friday before succumbing 3-0 to then-No. 15 Wisconsin on Sunday.
• Parkes Kendrick scored the game-winner on Friday, off a nice ball from Danica Evans, and freshman goalkeeper Taylor Luty made three saves for her first career shutout.
• On Sunday the Badgers scored three in the first half before holding on for the win.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • The Pilots dropped out of the rankings this week after beginning the season in the top-15 of all three major polls; Portland is still receiving votes and sits just outside the top 25 in both the NSCAA and Top Drawer Soccer rankings.
• The Pilots have faced two top-five opponents this season, traveling to No. 2 Florida State on Aug. 22 and hosting then-No. 5 Stanford on Aug. 30.
• Currently, five of Portland's 2014 opponents are ranked in the NSCAA poll.
• 4,847 fans attended Portland's match vs. Stanford on Aug. 30, and a record 2,503 students were in attendance; 2,503 students represents a remarkable 63% of the entire UP student body, and the overall crowd was the 15th largest in program history.
• Sophomore forward Danica Evans has scored two of Portland's three goals this season, while assisting on the third.
• The Pilots received three first-place votes and just missed being picked as the favorite to win the always challenging West Coast Conference.
• The Pilots placed a league-high three players on the All-WCC Preseason Team as sophomores Ellie Boon, Danica Evans and Allison Wetherington were each selected.
• Portland claimed the program's 13th WCC title last season after sharing the league crown with BYU and Santa Clara.
• The Pilots returned 12 letterwinners and seven starters from a team that reached the second round of the NCAA playoffs for the 14th straight year.
• Portland's roster features a heralded sophomore class that was ranked fifth in the nation entering UP as freshmen last fall; midfielder Allison Wetherington was named the 2013 WCC Freshman of the Year, while Ellie Boon (All-WCC Honorable Mention), Danica Evans (All-WCC Honorable Mention) and Ariel Viera (WCC All-Freshman Team) also garnered all-league recognition.
• Evans is Portland's top returning goal scorer after registering five goals during her freshman campaign, and she also tied for the team-high with seven assists.
• The Pilots have led the nation in attendance for nine straight years; UP set a then-NCAA record for attendance in a season when 47,082 fans attended Portland women's soccer games in 2008.
• The Pilots have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA playoffs for 14 straight seasons and have reached the playoffs during 21 of the last 22 years.
• Portland won the NCAA National Championship in 2002 and in 2005.
• Reigning WCC Coach of the Year Garrett Smith has been named the league's top coach six times.
• Smith is in his 12th year at the helm of the Pilots and has compiled an overall career mark of 194-41-17 (.807) and a remarkable 65-9-7 (.846) record in the WCC.
WELCOME BACK, AND THEN SOME • UP women's soccer alum and current member of the NWSL's Portland Thorns Angie Kerr (Woznuk) will return to Merlo Field on Friday and will be signing autographs and meeting with fans before the game with Miami at 7 p.m.
• A three-time All-America selection and All-WCC performer all four years, Kerr (2003, 05-07) helped the Pilots to the 2005 NCAA Championship, two NCAA quarterfinals appearances and a third-round showing in her four seasons on The Bluff.
• She led the Pilots to a 76-11-7 overall record and capped her career in sixth-place on the school's all-time assists list (34) and 13th in all-time scoring (72 points).
• Kerr's appearance is just one of many promotions at Merlo Field this weekend; others include Military Appreciation Night, Green Dot Awareness and Pilots Pre-Game on Friday, and all soccer moms who attend Sunday's game with a son or daughter in a soccer uniform will receive free admission.
