Box Score (pdf)MOSCOW, Idaho --- The Portland Pilots won the first set, but Idaho was able to come back and win the match 3-1 at the Memorial Gym on the University of Idaho Campus. Senior Emily Liger recorded a team and match high 17 kills.
Idaho (4-6) beat Portland (4-4) with set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, and 16-25.
Portland and Idaho were point-for-point, but it would be the Pilots that would pull away at the end to take the set 25-22. Only a few points separated the Vandals and the Pilots throughout the set. Portland trailed late in the game, but was able to close the small gap to tie the game at 21-21 on a pair of kills by Liger and sophomore Makayla Lindburg. The duo would strike again as Liger scored Portland's 22
nd, 23
rd, and 24
th points and Lindburg hit home a kill to get the Pilots to 25. Liger recorded a team high seven kills on the set.
The second set also proved a battle and this time it would be the Vandals who came out on top. The Pilots were tied with the Vandals 16 times during the set and neither team was able to gain momentum as the two sides fought for the lead. Idaho took the lead late and outlasted Portland to take the set. Sophomore Katie Sullivan led the team with five kills on the set.
The Vandals used a mid-set run to overcome the Pilots in the third set with a score of 20-25. Idaho scored four points in a row to make the score 13-17, but that lead would not last long as Liger converted a set from freshman Ali Koumelis into a point, cutting the deficit to three. Portland and Idaho once again battled point-for-point until the Vandals gained a six point lead at 16-22. From there, Idaho was able to edge out a Pilot come back and win the set. Liger and freshman Sarah Savoca each had four kills on the set.
Idaho completed the comeback by winning the fourth set 16-25. The Vandals used a 10-2 run in the middle of the set to take the lead 10-19. Portland cut the lead to six at 13-19, but the Vandals pulled away to take the set and match.
Koumelis completed 25 assists on the match and recieved All-Tournament honors after also having 20 assists againts Missouri and 23 against Eastern Washington.
The Pilots will be on the road again next week as they head to Orem, Utah to compete in the Utah Valley Tournament for the final weekend of non-conference play.
