AMERICAN LAKE, Wash. --- The Portland women's rowing varsity eight finished first and the Pilots had a solid showing on a windy morning at the PLU Invite, which took place on Saturday on American Lake. The varsity eight covered the course in a time of 6:52.8, which was easily the fastest time of the day.
 
The Pilots finished five seconds ahead of second place and NCAA Division II national power Western Washington, and Puget Sound was well back in third place.
 
The Pilots raced in eight events on the day, with some crews rowing more than one race. The varsity eight previously posted a time of 7:02.1, before improving by 10 seconds later in the morning.
 
"I'm glad we had two races so we could take the lessons from the first race and do better in the second session of racing, which showed more of what we can do," said Portland head coach Pasha Spencer. "The next marker is in two weeks when we try to break some records on Vancouver Lake at our first 'Easter Egg Race' on March 26." 
 
Portland's second eight claimed a time of 7:25.5, while the third eight covered the course in 7:37.3. The second eight and third eight each rowed in a second event, posting times of 7:34.1 and 7:40.7, respectively. The second eight won the two-crew race over host Pacific Lutheran, while the third eight bested a field that featured Puget Sound and Western Washington.
 
UP also raced a fourth eight, while the Pilots varsity four won its event against UPS.
