Schedule/ResultsSANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots beach volleyball team took to the sand for the first time in school history against Saint Mary's College on Tuesday afternoon at Main Beach. The experienced Gaels won the bout 5-0 on a cloudy day in the Bay Area.
Saint Mary's (4-1) entered the match coming off of a big win last week over No. 13 Stanford and kept the momentum going against Portland (0-1).
The match is comprised of five pairs from each team playing a best of three sets against a pair from the opposing school.
In the top match up, Saint Mary's Dalas Dodd and Lindsey Knudsen topped Morgan Robinson and Hannah Troutman 2-0 with set scores of 21-15 and 21-8.
Mary Hernandez and Payton Rund beat Makayla Lindburg and Maddy Mandon 2-0; Emily Bible and Lindsey Calvin took two sets against Pilots Katie Barker and Djurdjina Milovic; Agnieszka Kudziela and Madi Wilkerson topped Monica Gajda and Sarah Savoca 2-0.
Brittney Markwith and Katie Sullivan forced the second set to extra points, but fell to Hannah Liserra and Alex O'Sullivan 2-0.
The Pilots will continue their spring break California tour with a double header on Wednesday, March 8 against the University of San Francisco at 9:30 a.m. and San Jose State at 12:30 p.m.
