Box Score 2 Corvallis, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots concluded the first day at the Oregon State Tournament with an impressive, come-from-behind win over host Oregon State on Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The Pilots topped the Beavers 3-2 after trailing by two sets. Portland recovered from an earlier 3-1 loss to Seattle U to defeat their Pac-12 in-state rival.
During that opening match, Seattle (1-0) pulled away in the first set, leading 16-12. Portland then rallied late in the set with kills from Katie Sullivan, but Seattle held on to clinch the win 25-20. The Pilots then forced Seattle into extra points in the second set, making a comeback, but Seattle still claimed the set with a score of 29-27.
Portland did well to bounce back and surge ahead 7-1 during the third set. The Pilots then took control of the set with kills from Sullivan and key aces from Hannah Troutman to end up on top 25-16.
Entering the fourth set Portland dominated play, but Seattle made a comeback late to take the match 3-1 with a set score of 25-20. Troutman and Sullivan led the Pilots with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Djurdjina Milovic and freshman Cali Thompson notched 11 and 36 assists for the match.
The Pilots then took on OSU (1-1) in the evening, and the Beavers jumped taking the first set 25-20 and second 25-19. The Pilots then fought back and forth with OSU to tie up the third set 20-20. Several kills from Reghan Pukis, Troutman, and Sullivan helped the Pilots then pull away 25-21 to take the set.
In the fourth set the Pilots dominated play and claimed it by a score of 25-16. Now tied 2-2 overall, the two teams entered the fifth set. With the score at 9-7, the Pilots pulled away to take control, winning the deciding set 15-8.
Troutman and Pukis registered 16 and 19 kills for the match respectively, and Thompson added 53 assists.
The Pilots, now 1-1 in the OSU Tournament, will play their final match at 4:00 p.m. against Utah State tomorrow.
