TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Portland men's tennis senior Michail Pervolarakis had a historic fall season and his quality results vaulted him up the
Oracle/ITA Men's Tennis Singles Rankings, which were released on Wednesday. Pervolarakis jumped to No. 18 nationally, the highest ranking in Portland singles history.
Building off of a historic junior year in which he became Portland's first West Coast Conference Player of the Year, Pervolarakis was ranked No. 95 in the preseason rankings. He immediately proved himself by playing in all of the top fall tournaments, including winning two matches at the Oracle ITA Masters to open the season.
After winning one match at the ITA All-American Championships, he became the first player in school history to win the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Winning the regional was parlayed into a berth at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships where he played six matches, all against high-level players, and posted three outstanding wins.
The Limassol, Cyprus native posted a 12-4 overall fall singles record, including a 3-2 record against players that were nationally-ranked in the preseason.
With all fall tournaments completed, the latest singles rankings show the level of tennis that Pervolarakis was competing against in a number of major tournaments. He faced eight players that appear in the top 80 of the season's first computer rankings, winning half of those matches.
Pervolarakis posted wins over No. 7 Johannes Ingildsen (Florida), No. 28 Eduardo Mena (Tennessee Tech), No. 51 Michael Geerts (Arizona State) and No. 76 Toby Boyer (Nebraska).
All four of his losses came against highly ranked players: No. 9 Alex Knight (Michigan), No. 13 Brandon Holt (USC), No. 35 Stefan Milisevic (Minnesota) and No. 57 John McNally (Ohio State).
The next set of national rankings will be published on January 3, 2018.
Portland now prepares for a challenging spring dual season. Coming off of the program's first WCC championship in 2017, Portland is expected to be ranked as a team and hoping to compete for the program's first NCAA Championships appearance.
The spring dual schedule begins against Georgia State on Jan. 20 in Eugene, Ore. and then the Pilots will head to Wake Forest for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 26-27.
