PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots baseball team has received commitments from four recruits as Khalid Johnson (OF, Richmond, Calif./De La Salle HS), Jace McKinney (UTL, Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS/Mt. Hood CC), Collin Runge (INF, Redmond, Ore./Ridgeview HS/Chemeketa CC) and Travis Turney (OF, Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) will join the program in the fall, announced head coach Geoff Loomis. Johnson and Turney are incoming freshmen, while McKinney and Runge are transfers with two years of eligibility remaining.
Â
Khalid Johnson starred at De La Salle, where he helped the Spartans win the North Coast Section Championship in 2016 and 2017. An All-EBAL First Team selection in 2017, Johnson led the team in steals (16) and doubles (10) as senior. Previously, the outfielder led the league with 12 steals and 14 RBI's during his junior campaign. He also nabbed the team's coach's award last spring.
Â
"Khalid is an athletic outfielder who had a very good career at De La Salle, which is one of the best high school programs in the state of California," Loomis said. "He has game-changing speed and plays the game hard."
Â
Jace McKinney spent the past two years at Mount Hood CC, where he was a two-time all-conference selection. He led the NWAC South Region with a .385 batting average as a sophomore, and he led the Saints to the 2016 South Region Title.
Â
At Columbia River High School in Vancouver, McKinney was the 3A GSHL Player of the Year as a senior in 2015. He also earned first team all-state and first team all-region as a senior, and he landed on the all-league first team during his junior year. He helped the Chieftains win a league title in 2014, and the team reached the state playoffs twice. McKinney hit .512 with 37 RBI's and three home runs during his senior season.
Â
"Jace is versatile and can play virtually any defensive position on the field effectively," noted Loomis. "He is a solid left-handed bat and a plus runner. He has many tools and his versatility creates better depth for us."
Â
Collin Runge comes to The Bluff after spending two years at Chemeketa CC. Last season, Runge led the NWAC with a .406 batting average, helping the infielder land ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-American and All-Region honors. He was also named the NWAC South MVP, while landing on the all-league first team. Runge broke the all-time NWAC stolen base record with 34 steals last fall as the Storm reached regionals.
Â
Previously Runge hit .572 with 56 RBI's for the Ridgeview High School Ravens in 2014. He was a first-team all-league selection all three years he was on varsity, and he was named to the First Team All-State Team in 2014, after earning honorable mention all-state in 2013. Runge helped lead the Ravens to the 2014 Oregon State Semifinals.
Â
"Collin is an impact sign for us," said Loomis. "He's coming off a sophomore season at Chemeketa where he set an NWAC record for stolen bases and was awarded the league's Player of the Year award. He's versatile defensively, and he'll solidify our infield."
Â
Travis Turney, an outfielder who starred at Clovis West High School, was recently named the Offensive MVP at the Fresno City-County All-Star Game after leading off the contest with a solo home run to right field. He'd add a triple in his next at-bat, becoming the first player ever to hit a homer and a triple during the showcase. As a senior, Turney received California Region Honorable Mention accolades by Perfect Game, and he was selected to the Tri-River Conference DI First Team. He was also named the Clovis West Most Outstanding Offensive Player, and Perfect Game previously named him Underclass Honorable Mention in 2015 and 2016. Last spring he led the Golden Eagles in batting average (.384), hits (22), steals (7) and on-base percentage (.489).
Â
"Travis is a tremendous athlete who has an infectious style of play," Loomis said. "He goes 100 mph on the field and I love that about him. He's a left-handed hitting outfielder who can track balls in the outfield and create havoc on the base paths."
