SEATTLE, Wash. – The Portland men's tennis team completed day one action at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Tennis Center.
All nine Pilots on the roster travelled and competed in opening round action. Portland, featuring six true freshmen, won three of its four opening round doubles matches and had three singles players advance.
Senior Carlos Donat posted a three-set singles win over Oregon's Evan Felcher, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. Sophomore Tom Hann also pulled out a three-setter, defeating Bernardo Moraes of Sacramento State 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Freshman Nicklas Oberg cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Daniel Krutik of Saint Mary's.
Freshmen Leo Hibi and Issa Yoshida played well against tough competition before dropping their opening matches in three sets. Hibi fell to Washington senior Kawika Lam 1-6, 6-0, 6-4, while Yoshida dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision to Fresno State junior Angus Bradshaw.
In doubles action, Donat and freshman Sema Pankin teamed for an 8-1 win against Abdulaziz Albayouk and Moraes from Sacramento State. Junior Andrew Newell and Oberg picked up an 8-5 win against John Horoz-Garner and Johnathan Lieu of Pacific, while Hann and freshman Eleftherios Neos defeated Stanford's Jack Barber and Sam Turchetta in a tiebreaker. All three Pilot doubles teams that advanced were knocked out in the Round of 32.
