PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland is No. 1 on the men's side and ranks second overall in the initial West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup Standings, it was announced on Friday morning. Portland totaled 31.5 points during the fall sports season, which is second only to BYU.
Portland earned 16 points to earn the top spot in the men's sports standings, which was helped by the cross country and soccer teams. Portland finished second at the WCC Cross Country Championships and senior Nick Hauger won the individual title. The men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Playoffs, where they reached the second round.
The men's cross country team also won the West Region Championships, and they claimed the program's third podium finish in the past five years by finishing third at the NCAA Championships. Three Pilots earned All-America honors, tying the program record set last season. Junior Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse placed 21st to lead Portland and garner his second cross country All-America award. Senior Logan Orndorff crossed the line in 25th place for his first All-America honor, while Hauger placed 40th for his second award in as many years.
On the women's side, cross country also finished second at the WCC Championships, while both volleyball and women's soccer had solid showings in conference. The volleyball team advanced to the postseason for the first time in its NCAA Division I history, and the women's soccer team more than double their total wins from the previous season.
After it's second-place finish at the WCC meet, the women's cross country team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Portland placed a program-best 12th at the NCAA's, and both Lauren LaRocco and Taryn Rawlings nabbed All-American honors. LaRocco set a program record by finishing 13th individually.
The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the men's and women's basketball seasons conclude at the 2019 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships, held March 7-12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
