SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland extended its winning streak to four matches with a 4-2 victory against the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Pilots secured the doubles point with 6-2 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Mathieu and Pierre Garcia knocked off David Goulak and Tommy Lam at No. 2, while Carlos Donat and Jamie Fisher won their fourth straight at the No. 3 spot against Chethan Swanson and Jonathan Star.
The top of Portland's singles lineup continued its dominance. No. 21-ranked Michail Pervolarakis improved to 6-0 in dual singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Ivan Thamma at No. 1, while Mathieu Garcia won comfortably over David Goulak 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
"Doubles was huge for us today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We have had some hard lessons that we have learned from and were able to take advantage of it today. Mike and Mathieu continue to be so solid at the top of the lineup. Their experience and the amount of work that they put in daily shows up in their consistency."
UC Davis recorded straight set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, but Carlos Donat clinched for the Pilots with a 6-2, 7-6 (9) win against Star at No. 4. Pierre Garcia was up a set and tied 3-3 in the second against Everett Maltby when the team clinched.
"Carlos is that big match player that you want out there when the match is on the line," Gross said. "He was the one who eventually clinched in a close second set. I think Pierre would have ended up getting it done today if it continued. He hung tough at some key points and was in position to win when the match got called."
Portland will next host Army at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center on Friday at 9 a.m. before opening West Coast Conference play at BYU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
"We have been going at it pretty hard," Gross noted. "We have two more very tough weekends ahead, but I think we will keep getting better with each of these experiences throughout the course of the season."
