SANTA MONICA, CALIF.---  The Portland Pilots, who entered the 2018 WCC Beach Volleyball Championships as the No. 6 seed with an opening match against No.20 Saint Mary's, won one of three matches on the day.

"We competed well today, with a number of very talented and experienced WCC teams," said head coach Dylan Hamilton. "The conditions were not what we are typically used to, with deep sand and heavy wind, and I think as a team we did a nice job of responding to that adversity well throughout the day. We as a coaching staff are very pleased with the improvement of the beach program as a whole over the course of the season, and look forward to continuing to build in the years to come."
 
The win over Santa Clara advanced the Pilots to a match with the Pacific Tigers, which would decide if the team would advance. Though Pacific went on to win the match 4-1, senior Tani Stephens and sophomore Cali Thompson closed out the day in the 1's dual to win 21-16 and 21-19. The WCC Beach Championships concludes the 2018 beach volleyball season. Portland finishes the year with a record of 3-8.
