PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Rey Ortiz landed on the 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team, while fellow senior Francesco Tiozzo and junior Luke Hendel earned third-team honors, it was announced on Monday. This is Ortiz's third appearance on the all-west region teams, and it's the first regional recognition for both Tiozzo and Hendel.
Â
Ortiz, a midfielder from Acapulco, Mexico, led the Pilots with 13 points this season, which came on three goals and seven assists. He ends his career No. 7 all-time in program history with 24 overall assists, and his 13 assists as a sophomore in 2017 missed matching a program single-season record by one and ranked No. 3 in the nation. Ortiz was named to the all-west region first team the past two seasons, and he was voted to the All-WCC First Team this fall. Ortiz earned All-American honors in 2017, and he was selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list twice.
Â
Hendel appeared in all 17 games this fall for the Pilots, collecting team highs of five goals and three game-winners en route to All-WCC Second Team honors. The junior forward/midfielder from Berlin, Germany, was named the WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 6 after registering the game-winner during a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside at Merlo Field, and he also earned Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week Honorable Mention recognition. Previously Hendel landed on the TDS Team of the Week after scoring both of Portland's game-winners against George Washington and Davidson.
Â
Tiozzo, a center back from Chioggia, Italy, also earned all-league honorable mention in his final season on The Bluff. During his two years with the Pilots, Tiozzo played a key role in helping the team become one of the top defensive teams in the nation. Portland posted seven shutouts this fall, and Tiozzo was part of 13 clean sheets during his career.
